The Master of Respiratory Technology (M.RT) is an advanced postgraduate program designed to develop specialized knowledge and clinical expertise in the field of respiratory care. The program focuses on the comprehensive management of patients with acute and chronic respiratory disorders, integrating advanced diagnostic techniques, therapeutic interventions, and evidence-based clinical practices. It prepares students to handle complex respiratory conditions in critical care, emergency medicine, pulmonary rehabilitation, and sleep medicine settings.

The curriculum combines advanced theoretical learning, clinical training, and research exposure to strengthen the professional competencies of respiratory therapists. Students gain in-depth understanding of areas such as mechanical ventilation, pulmonary function testing, critical care monitoring, advanced airway management, non-invasive ventilation, and cardiopulmonary diagnostics. Emphasis is also placed on clinical decision-making, patient safety, quality improvement, and interdisciplinary collaboration in modern healthcare systems.

Objectives of the Programme
  • To provide advanced knowledge of respiratory anatomy, physiology, and pathophysiology related to acute and chronic pulmonary disorders.
  • To develop expertise in advanced respiratory care techniques, including mechanical ventilation, airway management, pulmonary function testing, and critical care monitoring.
  • To enhance clinical decision-making skills for the assessment, diagnosis, and management of patients with complex cardiopulmonary conditions.
  • To train students in the use of advanced respiratory diagnostic and therapeutic equipment used in intensive care units, emergency departments, and pulmonary laboratories.
  • To promote evidence-based practice and research skills in respiratory care through research methodology, data analysis, and dissertation work.
  • To develop competencies in pulmonary rehabilitation, patient education, and long-term respiratory care management.

CAREER PROSPECTS
  • Clinical Respiratory Therapist: Work in tertiary care hospitals, intensive care units (ICUs), emergency departments, and pulmonary care units to manage patients with acute and chronic respiratory conditions using advanced respiratory care techniques.
  • Critical Care Specialist: Assist intensivists and pulmonologists in managing mechanically ventilated patients, performing advanced airway management, and monitoring critically ill patients in ICUs.
  • Pulmonary Function Technologist: Conduct and interpret pulmonary function tests (PFTs), arterial blood gas analysis, and other diagnostic procedures in pulmonary laboratories.
  • Pulmonary Rehabilitation Specialist: Work in pulmonary rehabilitation centers to design and implement rehabilitation programs for patients with chronic respiratory diseases such as COPD, asthma, and interstitial lung diseases.
  • Academic Faculty / Clinical Instructor: Pursue careers in teaching and training in universities and allied health science institutions, contributing to the education of future respiratory therapists.
  • Research Associate / Clinical Researcher: Participate in clinical trials, respiratory care research projects, and healthcare studies in academic institutions, research organizations, and hospitals.
  • Medical Equipment / Ventilator Specialist: Work with medical device companies in roles such as clinical application specialist, product trainer, or technical consultant for ventilators and respiratory care equipment.
  • Sleep Lab Technologist: Work in sleep laboratories assisting in the diagnosis and management of sleep-related breathing disorders such as obstructive sleep apnea.

Eligibility Criteria
  • Candidates must have passed B.RT on regular mode from recognised university.
  • Admission on the basis of entrance exams by respective university.
  • Post graduate entrance criteria requires to be compulsory registered member of National Commission of Allied and Healthcare Professions (NCAHP).
  • Medical fitness certificate is mandatory to submit and it is to be endorsed by Government medical officer.
  • Reservation policy for admission in post graduate programs shall be as per the State/Centre Government norms.
  • Foreign students' admission process in Post Graduation (PG):
    • Foreign national students intending to study PG program in India, shall have to take equivalence certificate of eligibility certificate from respective State Allied and Healthcare Council.
    • Admission of foreign national students, merit list will be based on University Entrance Exam.
    • Verification of Valid Visa and valid Visa duration of foreign national students, to be verified by respective institution & University before enrolling students for program.
  • Admission process shall be conducted by State/Union Territory/University.

HOW TO APPLY

STEP I: Online registration to Master of Medical Radiology And Imaging Technology (MMRIT) programme: Complete the online registration by filling the online registration form and making online payment of registration charges. Registration charges are Rs.1500/-

STEP II: You will be called for Entrance Examination & Personal Interaction (PI).

STEP III: Selection will be intimated to the candidate through email.

STEP IV: Admission process will be completed after the verification of all the submitted documents and payment of 1st instalment of academic fees.

For Bachelor Radiation Therapy Technology (BRTT) programme eligibility criteria is as follows: Candidates must have passed Senior Secondary (10+2) or equivalent with Physics, Chemistry, and Biology. Admission on the basis of Senior Secondary (10+2) Merit. Lateral Entry to the candidates in the second year (3rd semester) who have passed Diploma in the same discipline.
  • Step 4: Click on "Register". Read all the Instructions carefully and then click on the 'I Agree' button to accept the Terms and Conditions. Fill in Mini Registration Form. Click on the "Register Now".
  • Step 5: Fill in the personal details & educational details. You need to upload required documents and make a payment of application fee to complete the registration process. Candidates can use online or offline payment options to pay the application fee (non-refundable).

PROGRAMME OUTCOME

Upon successful completion of the programme, students will be able to:

  • Apply advanced knowledge of respiratory sciences including anatomy, physiology, and pathophysiology for effective assessment and management of cardiopulmonary disorders.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in advanced respiratory care techniques, including mechanical ventilation, airway management, pulmonary function testing, and critical care monitoring.
  • Perform and interpret diagnostic procedures such as arterial blood gas analysis, pulmonary function tests, sleep studies, and other respiratory investigations.
  • Provide evidence-based respiratory care for patients with acute and chronic respiratory conditions in various healthcare settings including ICUs, emergency departments, and pulmonary rehabilitation units.
  • Utilize advanced respiratory care equipment and technologies safely and effectively while maintaining patient safety and quality standards.
  • Conduct research and apply research methodologies to analyze clinical problems, interpret data, and contribute to the advancement of respiratory care practices.
  • Demonstrate leadership, teamwork, and communication skills while working collaboratively with multidisciplinary healthcare teams.
  • Promote patient education, pulmonary rehabilitation, and preventive respiratory care to improve long-term health outcomes.

Evaluation & Assessments
Assessment
  • Theory: Structured essay (30 marks), short notes (25 marks), short answers (15 marks).
  • Practical/OSCE: Clinical case presentation, procedural OSCE stations, viva-voce.
  • Dissertation/Project: To be submitted 3 months before final exam; evaluated on originality, methodology, and defense.
Standard of Passing
  • Minimum 50% aggregate in each subject (theory, viva, practical, and internal).
  • Overall 50% aggregate required for pass.
Award of Degree

Completion of all 80 credits, including the thesis and clinical requirements, is mandatory for the award of M.Sc. Respiratory Technology (Adult Respiratory Care). Master of Respiratory Technology (M.RT) will be awarded on successful completion of the program. It will be awarded at the end of semester IV examination by taking into consideration the performance of all semester examinations.
