Orientation and Pedagogy

Teaching in the Master of Science in Anesthesia and Operation Theatre Technology (M.Sc. AOTT) programme is structured to develop advanced theoretical knowledge, specialized clinical expertise, research competence, and professional leadership required in modern anesthesia, perioperative, and critical care services. The programme focuses on enhancing skills in anesthesia techniques, operation theatre management, patient monitoring, emergency care, and pain management.

The programme follows the competency-based framework recommended by the National Commission for Allied and Healthcare Professions (NCAHP), integrating higher-level academic learning with intensive clinical training and structured research exposure. This approach enables students to develop critical thinking, clinical decision-making abilities, and leadership skills, preparing them to excel in advanced anesthesia practice, OT management, and multidisciplinary healthcare environments.

PEDAGOGY

The M.AOTT programme follows a competency-based, outcome-oriented pedagogy as recommended by the National Commission for Allied and Healthcare Professions (NCAHP). It is designed to ensure the development of advanced clinical competence, critical thinking, research capability, and professional leadership in anesthesia and perioperative care.

  • Competency-Based Education (CBE): Focuses on the achievement of clearly defined competencies in anesthesia assistance, advanced airway management, operation theatre practices, patient monitoring, and critical care support.
  • Integrated Teaching–Learning: Blends advanced theoretical knowledge with clinical application through lectures, case-based discussions, simulation-based training, and problem-based learning.
  • Clinical Skill Development: Extensive hands-on training in operation theatres, intensive care units (ICUs), and emergency settings, emphasizing real-time patient management, anesthesia techniques, and equipment handling.
  • Simulation-Based Training: Use of high-fidelity simulators and skill labs to practice airway management, resuscitation (BLS/ACLS), crisis management, and anesthesia procedures in a controlled environment.
  • Research-Oriented Learning: Structured research training including research methodology, biostatistics, dissertation work, and evidence-based practice to enhance analytical and scientific thinking.
  • Interprofessional Education (IPE): Encourages collaboration with anesthesiologists, surgeons, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to promote team-based patient care.
  • Ethics and Professionalism: Emphasis on patient safety, ethical practice, legal responsibilities, infection control, and adherence to standard operating protocols.
