Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science (B.MLS)

Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science

The Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science is an undergraduate program designed to develop skilled professionals capable of performing complex diagnostic procedures that are critical to patient care. Offered by Symbiosis Institute of Health Sciences, this program integrates academic excellence with practical experience to prepare students for a vital role in the healthcare system. Students receive in-depth training in Clinical Biochemistry, Microbiology, Haematology, Immunology, Pathology, and Molecular Diagnostics. The curriculum is supported by hands-on learning in advanced laboratories and clinical internships at affiliated hospitals, ensuring graduates are work-ready upon completion.

Rapid advances in medical technology have greatly improved healthcare but also increased its complexity. Effective healthcare now depends on a multidisciplinary team, including professionals beyond doctors and nurses. As technology and standardised protocols become central to diagnosis and treatment, trained healthcare service managers and specialists are essential to ensure efficiency, safety, and quality.

Medical Laboratory Professionals play a key role by working with physicians and technicians to diagnose and monitor diseases and evaluate treatment effectiveness. Trained in areas such as microbiology, clinical chemistry, haematology, immunology, transfusion medicine, toxicology, and molecular diagnostics, they provide accurate and timely laboratory results that guide clinical decision-making.

ORIENTATION & PEDAGOGY

Teaching in Medical Laboratory Sciences (MLS) integrates theory, practical skills, clinical application, and professional conduct. As a competency-based programme, the focus is on developing both strong scientific understanding and hands-on laboratory proficiency.

1. Didactic Teaching (Foundational Knowledge)
  • Lectures & Seminars: Core concepts in haematology, microbiology, biochemistry, immunology, and pathology.
  • Interactive Tutorials: Test interpretation and clinical correlations.
  • E-learning & Flipped Classroom: Pre-class modules and in-class application.
2. Laboratory-Based Learning (Skill Development)
  • Hands-On Practicals: Microscopy, staining, biochemical assays, serology, and molecular techniques.
  • Simulation Training: Virtual labs, biosafety, specimen handling, and error troubleshooting.
  • OSPE: Structured evaluation of technical and procedural competence.
3. Problem & Case-Based Learning
  • Problem-Based Learning (PBL): Integrated diagnostic case-solving.
  • Case Discussions: Linking lab findings to patient scenarios.
  • Error Analysis Workshops: Identifying pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical errors.
4. Clinical Exposure & Work-Integrated Learning
  • Clinical Rotations/Internships: Real-world laboratory experience.
  • Workplace-Based Assessments: Logbooks, portfolios, and DOPS.
  • Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Working with physicians and healthcare teams.
5. Research & Innovation
  • Evidence-Based Learning: Critical appraisal of scientific literature.
  • Innovation Challenges: SOP development and automation ideas.
6. Professional & Soft Skills Development
  • Communication Skills Training: Accurate reporting and teamwork.
  • Ethics & Biosafety: Integrated across modules.
  • Team-Based Learning: Promotes accountability and collaboration.

Outcome: Competent, analytical, and industry-ready laboratory professionals.

EVALUATION & ASSESSMENTS

Assessment in MLS must evaluate not only knowledge acquisition but also practical skills, clinical reasoning, professionalism, and workplace competence. A blended approach using both formative (ongoing feedback) and summative (final evaluation) assessments ensures that students achieve the required competencies.

ASSESSMENT

The academic performance is assessed on the basis of both Continuous assessment and End Semester Examination (ESE) in each semester. ESE weightage will be in the ratio of 30 % for CIE and 70 % for ESE.

STANDARD OF PASSING

A Candidate must score 50% separately in theory and practical wherever applicable to be declared as pass. In case of fail, subsequently a candidate has to appear for both theory and practical examination of the university in that particular course.

AWARD OF DEGREE

Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science (B.MLS) will be awarded on successful completion of the program. It will be awarded at the end of semester VIII examination by taking into consideration the performance of all semester examinations after obtaining minimum 4.00 CGPA out of 10 CGPA.
