B.Sc. in Radiotherapy | B.Sc. in Radiotherapy Technology

B.Sc. (Hons) Radiotherapy Technology

B.Sc. (Hons) Radiotherapy Technology

OBJECTIVE

Approved by Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB).

The Bachelor of Science in Radiotherapy (B.Sc. RT) (Hons) is an undergraduate degree program that focuses on the training in Radiation therapy used for cancer treatment through the use of advanced technology and procedures. During the program, students learn about various aspects of radiotherapy, including Anatomy and Physiology of Human Body Systems, Radiobiology, Principles of Radiotherapy, Medical Physics, Radiation Safety and Protection, Instrumentation, Dosimetry, along with patient preparation & care. They also gain hands-on experience in using therapeutic equipment such as linear accelerator and brachytherapy machines, CT simulator. Upon completion of the program, graduates are equipped with the skills and knowledge required to work as radiotherapy technologists in hospitals, clinics, and other healthcare settings. They work alongside medical physicist, radiation oncologist, radiological safety officer, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to perform procedures such as radiation therapy treatment, CT simulation, patient counselling and assist in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer.

This programme focusses on creating a cadre of individuals that would be in a position to competently assist the oncologist, to cater to the branch of Radiotherapy globally. Given the increasing rates of cancer across the globe; there is need for effective radiation treatment strategies & well-trained radiation technologists to manage cancer. The programme has a synergistic blend of theoretical knowledge and practical skilling in the radiotherapy field to train potential technologists to be knowledgeable and skilled in:

  1. Set ups required for different types of treatment like Three-Dimensional Conformal Radiation Therapy (3D-CRT), Image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT), Intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), Stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS)/ Stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT), Total Body Irradiation (TBI)
  2. Digitally Reconstructed Radiography (DRR) matching, applying couch shifts, use of various beam modifying devices dosimetry calculations
  3. Quality Assurance tests for A linear accelerator (LINAC) and brachytherapy
  4. Treatment Planning systems (TPS)

These students would be in a position to competently assist the Physician, to cater to the branch of Radiotherapy globally.

CAREER PROSPECTS

Given that the demand for Radiotherapy Technologists who can provide diagnostic and therapeutic services have been growing at a much faster pace than the number being trained every year, graduating students can pick up careers in the following domains:

  • Hospital - Radiotherapy department, Radiotherapy centers
  • Medical Technology industry
  • Medical equipment companies
  • Academic institutes
  • Simulation centers
  • Cancer Research & Development centers
  • IT in Medical Technology

ORIENTATION & PEDAGOGY

In the B.Sc. (Hons) Radiotherapy program, students undergo rigorous training for 4 years where they learn various modalities under their specializations and understand their working principles and their operations protocols.

Before they are deputed for clinical training, they are first sensitized and trained in developing and mastering the necessary techniques & skills required prior to exposure to hospital in a simulated environment.

They are then exposed to live cases and ‘hands-on’ training at Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital & Research Center (DMHRC), and associated healthcare organizations.

The programme introduces students to emerging technologies and their applications. Students spend a considerable part of their learning time in hospital set-ups where they are exposed to actual 'hands-on' practical training. Each student works on a research project and understands the intricacies of research methodology & grant writing related to his / her specialization.

Successfully completing an honours degree prepares the student for higher-degree study at master's and PhD level. This is also helpful to demonstrate a higher capacity for independent learning and research, along with enhanced problem-solving, critical thinking and communication skills. This include supervised research, and require students to maintain a high academic standard.

The well-equipped health skill laboratories facility strives to provide high–tech simulated and virtually created hospital set-up for teaching, training and assessment for all health care professionals in clinical and related management skills making SIHS one of the best BSc Radiotherapy colleges in Pune. The broad objective is to align with the National Agenda of Skill Development to create a robust and vibrant ecosystem for quality education and skill development in the healthcare sector in the country. This simulation-based training is an integral part of education and training in Radiotherapy and helps students to expertise the technical competencies followed by real time “Hands-On” practical training in hospital.

As part of their curriculum, students are taught additional modules on Information Technology (IT) & Management relevant to the healthcare. The students are also trained in soft skills, Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS). The Global Immersion Program (GIP) & Social Services exposes the students to the external world & helps in the overall development of the student. There is emphasis on a multidisciplinary approach towards achieving professional success.

After completion of 1st year, students undergo “Observership” to expose them in various departments of hospital for a better understanding of the specialization they would like to pursue. Further, Students are continuously exposed to experiential learning through “SIP” (Summer Internship Program) and “OJT” (On Job Training) equipping them with practical “hands-on” skills to enhance their career advancement. Students are also involved in Service-learning activities and community-based research projects.

The pedagogy includes synchronous & asynchronous academic sessions, demonstrations, discussions, quizzes, presentations and practicals.

EVALUATION / ASSESSMENT

Students will be evaluated throughout the four years of the programme by periodic tests as well as assignments. Consideration will be given for the student's contribution to classroom discussions, written reports, reading and other assignments. The evaluation of the student's performance is done by means of continuous on-going internal evaluations as well as at the end of each semester external examination will be conducted by SIU.

The evaluation will have both internal & external components. The internal component will be continuous throughout the semester & external component will be conducted by the university at the end of the semester. A student would be required to pass in each head (internal and external) independently. Students would be assessed according to the Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) system.

Students would be awarded the Grade Point Average where grades would be awarded based on the class average. A student would be required to perform consistently well.

The B.Sc. (Hons) Radiotherapy programme will have a total of 160 credits in 4 years. Each credit is defined as 15 hours of teaching (Lecture or Lecture demonstration) or 30 hours of supervised practicals. Each credit is assessed for 25 Marks. For all external courses internal assessment will be of 40% and external assessment will be of 60%. Practicals will be 100% external. Internal courses will be evaluated 100% internally by the institute.

Satisfactory completion of the letter grade courses 'Integrated Disaster Management', 'Core Environmental Studies' and ‘Fitness for Life’ are mandatory for award of degree. Satisfactory completion of Observer ship with hospital after semester II examination and Hospital Practicum Training with hospital/industry/Research organization after completion of semester III, IV, V & VI examination is mandatory for award of degree.

EXAMINATION PATTERN

All internal courses will have 100% component as continuous internal evaluation at the institute level. All external courses will have 40% internal component and 60% external component [University] examination.

STANDARD OF PASSING

The assessment of the student for each examination is done, based on relative performance. Maximum Grade Point (GP) is 10 corresponding to O (Outstanding). For all courses, a student is required to pass both internal and external examination separately with a minimum Grade Point of 4 corresponding to Grade P. Students securing less than 40% absolute marks in each head of passing will be declared FAIL. The University awards a degree to the student who has achieved a minimum CGPA of 4 out of maximum of 10 CGPA for the program.
