Orientation and Pedagogy

Teaching in Endoscopy & Laparoscopy Technology is designed to develop strong theoretical foundations, advanced technical competencies, ethical clinical practice, infection control expertise, and professional behaviour required in modern minimally invasive healthcare settings.

The programme follows a competency-based educational framework recommended by the National Commission for Allied and Healthcare Professions (NCAHP), integrating classroom learning with simulation-based and real-time clinical exposure.

Orientation

At the beginning of the programme, students undergo a structured orientation to familiarize them with:

  • Scope and responsibilities of an Endoscopy & Laparoscopy Technologist
  • Basics of operation theatre and endoscopy suite functioning
  • Surgical asepsis, sterilization, and infection control protocols
  • Patient safety and emergency management
  • Biomedical equipment handling and maintenance
  • Professional ethics, confidentiality, and legal responsibilities
  • Communication skills and patient interaction
  • Institutional rules, academic regulations, and clinical protocols

This orientation prepares students for safe, ethical, and responsible clinical practice.

Pedagogy (Teaching–Learning Approach)

The programme integrates theoretical instruction with extensive practical and clinical training to ensure gradual competency development.

1. Classroom Learning

Students receive structured theoretical instruction through:

  • Interactive lectures
  • Tutorials and discussions
  • Audio-visual learning sessions
  • Case-based teaching
  • Surgical instrumentation demonstrations

This builds strong foundations in human anatomy and physiology, surgical sciences, gastroenterology and minimally invasive surgery, endoscopic and laparoscopic instrumentation, biomedical technology, patient care and ethics, infection control and sterilization.

2. Skill-Based & Simulation Training

Before assisting in live procedures, students practice:

  • Equipment handling and troubleshooting
  • Endoscope assembly and maintenance
  • Laparoscopic instrument handling
  • Sterilization and disinfection techniques
  • Patient positioning and preparation
  • Emergency response protocols

Simulation-based learning enhances technical confidence and patient safety.

3. Clinical Training

Clinical exposure begins early and progresses semester-wise. Students are trained in:

  • Upper GI Endoscopy
  • Colonoscopy
  • Bronchoscopy
  • Cystoscopy
  • Diagnostic and Therapeutic Endoscopy
  • Basic and Advanced Laparoscopic Procedures
  • Operation Theatre Assistance
  • Central Sterile Services Department (CSSD)

Students gradually transition from supervised learning to independent procedural assistance during internship.

4. Case-Based & Problem-Based Learning

Students participate in:

  • Case discussions
  • Procedure demonstrations
  • Journal clubs
  • Surgical presentations
  • Clinical audits and discussions

This promotes critical thinking, analytical ability, and clinical decision-making.

5. Research & Professional Development

The curriculum includes:

  • Research methodology and biostatistics
  • Scientific presentations and seminars
  • Exposure to quality improvement initiatives
  • Leadership and communication skill development
  • Evidence-based practice and lifelong learning
Internship

The final year includes a compulsory rotatory internship providing intensive hands-on training in endoscopy suites, operation theatres, minimally invasive surgical units, and related healthcare settings. This internship ensures graduates become clinically competent and industry-ready professionals.

Overall, the programme’s orientation and pedagogy are designed to produce technically skilled, ethically responsible, patient-centered, and professionally competent Endoscopy & Laparoscopy Technologists capable of working independently or as integral members of multidisciplinary surgical healthcare teams.
